Sheep and dog rescued by RNLI and coastguard

Both the RNLI and coastguard on the Isle of Man responded after a dog went over a cliff. On arrival, the teams also discovered a sheep.

The RNLI Douglas lifeboat crew rescued a dog and a sheep after both animals went over the cliff near Port Grenaugh, Isle of Man.

The volunteers were initially contacted by the Douglas Coastguard who needed assistance in rescuing a dog.

On arrival, the crew of the all-weather lifeboat, Sir William Hillary, were advised that the dog had already been returned to its anxious owner.

However, a sheep had also been discovered at the bottom of the cliff.

The coastguard team had already secured the animal in a net bag, but were unable to retrieve it.

The lifeboat was unable to get close enough to the bottom of the cliff. Instead, crewmen Peter Cowin and Donald Bottomley used the lifeboat’s inflatable dinghy to reach the shore.

Once on the rocks, the two men carried the sheep into the dinghy and returned to the lifeboat.

It then towed the dinghy to the beach at Port Grenaugh, where the farmer who owned the animal was waiting.

The incident happened on the evening of 17 July.
